Want to become a Sex Toy Reviewer?

Over the past few months, I have received a fair few emails and tweeter messages asking how to become a sex toy tester.

I could be bleak and say something like “set up a blog and write reviews”.

But it’s not as simple as that.  To become a decent sex toy tester, you need to be dedicated, have the urge to help others make an informed choice on products and be able to have an open view on all ranges within the sex product industry.

You want to become a blogger?

Where do I start? What do I do?

1)  Make your blog/website clearly focused, don’t simply chuck in a load of naughty pictures, words and so forth.  Plan a lay out and make it easy for a visitor/reader to find their way around your website.

If you are like me and find building a website doesn’t come naturally, then I would highly suggest using a wordpress format.  I use Host Gator and find them to be no problem, although there are many other hosting service companies out there that are just as good.

Then figure out what you want your website to look like and focus on.  I prefer to advise about buying your own domain and URL, for one it looks much more professional than blogspot.com. But you will find self-hosting won’t throw up as many obstacles.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so take your time with your website.

2)  Social media is a big part of promoting online sites and retail.  So to start with, set up a twitter account, under an anonymous name related to your website or writing handle, is a good place to start.

Get to know other medias like Pinterest, Facebook (like page), GooglePlus.

Generating a following is the key!

3)  Don’t be fooled, we don’t make a lot of £££££ as reviewers and those who do, have been in this business for a fair while and offer other alternatives than reviews.  There is a way to make a quick buck or two and that is by joining affiliate programs, below is a list of a few affiliate programs linked with sex toy retailers:

Get into the community by joining forums such as Lovehoney’s customer forum.  Get into conversations with sex bloggers online.  For me, I drew a lot of inspiration and advice from Molly’s Daily Kiss, Rebel Notes, Curvaceous Dee.

At this stage, I wouldn’t entertain the idea of setting up Ad spaces for purchasing on your site, until you have established yourself.

4)  At the moment, there is an influx of sex bloggers and a lot have their own styles.  I would suggest that if you are starting off as a sex blogger, have a look at these fabulous bloggers:

There is no particular writing style that is needed, as long as you convey the correct details, honest opinions and produce a good quality review, then you are on a roll.

Write reviews for sex toy or adult products that you currently have and have purchased yourself, this will help build a new blog up.

5)  Get to know the difference between materials used to produce sex toy products.  There is a big health issue with materials and these articles by Dangerous Lilly on Toxic Sex Toys is a brilliant and informative read.

Educate yourself in the pros and cons of materials, what is the different between non-porous/porous materials and what is body safe and what is not.  This is important as a sex toy blogger, you need to know these facts!

6)  Don’t be shy, make the first contact with online retailers and sex toy companies.  Word a polite email, explain in short who you are and what you are wanting to achieve.  Add in your social media stats, if you are  anew blogger then mention this but if you are established, mention your website stats.   Add in relevant links to social medias and your website.  Keep the first contact email short and sweet but detailed.

Let a company know what benefits of you reviewing a product of theirs’, will bring.

Mention that you do not charge but with sending you a product for free you will return this favor with an honest and detailed product review.

Blogging is fun, it can be hard work that feels like a burden at times but the goods always out do the bad’s, in my opinion.  Have fun and run with it, join in twitter conversations like #sextalktuesday. build bridges with fellow bloggers and retailers.  Many of us out there are more than happy to lend a hand in anyway possible, so don’t be afraid to approach us.
